Canoeing/Kayaking
There
are several good opportunities in the county for canoeists and kayakers. The Yellow River offers a good canoeing opportunity throughout
its length. It is especially scenic from around Boyd
downstream to Cadott. Canoeists will have to take out above the
Cadott dam and put in downstream of Cadott to continue on downstream
to Lake Wissota. During low water periods, it becomes more difficult
to canoe without getting out to drag a canoe over shallow water
areas.
The section of the Chippewa River from Chippewa Falls downstream
to the Lake Hallie area is a nice 7-mile stretch to canoe and fish.
The original river channel below the main Jim Falls dam (about one
mile) has been developed as a kayaking area. Xcel
Energy has three periods during the summer when they release
more water for kayakers to enjoy.
For a more intimate "Boundary Waters" type experience, explore some of the Chippewa County's numerous small glacial lakes, especially in the county forest and Chippewa Moraine area. Public access points exist on many of these lakes, notably North and South Shattuck, Plummer, Townline, Horseshoe, and Knickerbocker, all in the Chippewa Moraine area. Most of these offer fishing opportunities as well.
